SAFE is an acronym for “Supporting Addiction Free Environments for Lake County” and is Lake County, Indiana’s coalition against substance, use, abuse and misuse in adults and adolescents.
Our members consist of both individuals and organizations and make up our THREE PILLARS: PREVENTION (Education), SUPPORT (Treatment & Intervention), and ACCOUNTABILITY (Law Enforcement & Legislation).
Catch My Breath is a nationally recognized, evidence-based youth vaping prevention program that empowers students to make informed decisions before they are exposed to e-cigarettes and nicotine.
Through engaging, interactive lessons, participants learn the facts about vaping, understand how nicotine affects the developing brain, recognize the influence of advertising and peer pressure, and build the confidence to make healthy choices.
The need for prevention remains clear.
According to the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey, approximately 1.63 million U.S. middle and high school students currently use e-cigarettes, representing 5.9% of all students surveyed. Among high school students, 7.8% reported current e-cigarette use, while 3.5% of middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes continue to be the most commonly used tobacco product among youth, and many users report frequent or daily use.
Prevention starts with education. By bringing Catch My Breath to schools throughout Lake County, educators are helping students develop the knowledge and skills they need to resist vaping, avoid nicotine addiction, and protect their long-term health. Together with their families, and community partners, CATCH is working to create a healthier, vape-free future for our youth.
